A note from our founder and CEO, Danniielle O'Connor

My passion for music runs deep, very deep, and began very early in my childhood. I loved listening to the records my parents would play on our HiFi system back in the 1970s. They played everything from the Beatles to Creedence Clearwater Revival, Abba, John Denver, Boz Scaggs, Billy Joel, Doobie Brothers, Wings, and too many more to mention.

In my teenage years, I discovered the likes of Pink Floyd, the Doors, Electric Light Orchestra, Dire Straits, Elton John, Eagles, Supertramp, Santana, Genesis, Queen, David Bowie, Midnight Oil, Split Enz, Mike Oldfield, Dragon, Inxs, Boom Crash Opera, Cold Chisel, and all the 80s top 40 artists on my favourite FM radio stations.

I have formal training in classical and jazz, so my influences also span many of the classical and jazz composers. I now play multiple instruments including piano, synthesizer, guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and trumpet.

Everything changed radically for me when dad took me to The Age Electronics Show in Melbourne in the early 1980s.

I remember vividly the moment I first heard the newly invented Compact Disc being demonstrated through some high end amplifiers and a huge pair of Martin Logan electrostatic loudspeakers. I froze in my tracks! I had never heard anything like it. The album playing was Jean-Michel Jarre, Oxygene, and the track was Oxygene Part 2.

The sound quality was simply breathtaking, and the music was out of this world! I felt like I was flying through space, on board a spaceship!

That album remains one of my all-time favourite albums to this day, and Jean-Michel Jarre continues to be one of my greatest musical influences.

Hearing Oxygene in such grandeur triggered my passion for both audio quality and interdimensional, electronic music that has continued to grow stronger with every year I venture through this life. From that moment on, I went on a quest to find more of this magical music and the incredible instruments used to create it.

I soon discovered the mesmerising, captivating music of Tangerine Dream and I was hooked! They too have become one of my greatest influences, as have Kraftwerk, Vangelis, and Mike Oldfield.

I began dreaming of creating my own recording studio with a room full of synthesizers and elaborate recording equipment. I drew pictures of mixing consoles, tape decks, surround sound speaker arrays and anything else I could dream up.

At 14 years of age, I designed and built my own HiFi amplifier and speaker system, which I still have, and had placed speakers all around my bedroom in my own custom matrix surround layout. I just couldn't get enough of all this!

I started my own journey into music composition in 1984 with a Roland Juno 6 synthesizer, a Studiomaster Studio 4 cassette multitrack, and an Akai 4000DS MK2 stereo open reel tape deck.

That journey continues to this day and I now own the recording studio and the room full of synthesizers I dreamed about back then.

This year marks the beginning of my fifth decade creating music, and I've been involved with more projects, albums, bands and artists, recording sessions, and live shows than I can count. The list includes everything from concert bands and jazz ensembles to rock and pop groups, experimental electronic collaborations, tribal and shamanic performances, film scoring, theatre composition, and solo projects. For a list of the most well known Australian bands and artists I have worked with, CLICK or TAP HERE.

I've also been part of several record labels, with my first official one being Force Majeure Music back in 1993, which saw the release of my first CD.

My most recent record label involvement was with Red Manor Records in the UK. I was the RMR mastering engineer and am good friends with the then CEO, Tony Villa. We released several albums in that time, and we trade marked my vinyl record mastering process, QV (Quiet Vinyl). This was a process I developed to ensure our releases retained the utmost sound quality and, especially, dynamic range.

I am deeply inspired by visionaries such as Michael Gudinski of Mushroom Records and Richard Branson who founded Virgin Records, the latter of which signed both Mike Oldfield and Tangerine Dream.

All this has lead me to creating Strange Attractor Records. It is the logical extension of my passion for music and an outlet not only for my own music projects, but the projects of those who share my passion for out if this world music!

Whether you are a creator, or a passionate listener of such musical expression, you are in the right place!
